Plein
Sud is a documentary series which will be broadcast in 13 hour-long
episodes on TV5 in early 2002.
The globe trotting reporter, Madeleine Poulin, and her friend, Reginald
Fleury, a 25 years old Quebecer with Haitian origins, seek to discover
or rediscover for Madeleine - the true American identity.
At the wheel of a four-wheel-drive vehicle, they will explore two continents,
following in the footsteps of Joliette and Marquette who, in 1672, reached
the New World by way of the Mississippi River. They will travel to Louisiana,
cross Central America, follow the Andes until Tierra del Fuego, and
visit Brasilia before ending their journey in a pirogue on the Orinoca
surrounded by the Amazon jungle.
By following them, we will feel archaeological sites, highland
plantations, wild landscapes and the pueblos of South America: new sights
for Reginald; but not for Madeleine, who describes the changes which
have taken place since her first travels in the Americas.
Through
diverse and spontaneous encounters with fishermen, coffee growers, peasants,
indigenous people, street children, civil servants, etc, as well as
interviews with musicians, artists, writers, political leaders past
and present and some of Madeleine's old friends, in attempting to reveal
and understand the many American cultures.
Is there a single American identity in the eyes of people from Louisiana,
Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama,
Ecuador, Peru, Chili, Argentina and Brazil? Plein Sud will try to find
out.
